Here’s a helpful tip from Mark Olsen, your fast fair, friendly insurance agent in Colorado Springs:

“Don’t let your hose pipes freeze in winter! It’s very simple: I usually have about 3 or 4 claims a year from clients where water has entered the home because of frozen pipes. How that happens is, when it freezes outside, the if you have a garden host connected, the hose will freeze and water goes up into the spigot and freezes inside and bursts the spigot or pipes. Then your home fills up with water. This is a very expensive claim! The average claim is nearly $5,000 and it takes almost three weeks to repair it properly, so all you need to do is just take the hose off you’re good to go. Really! Just take your garden hose off your spigot and save yourself from an expensive claim.
Also, one more tip: if you have a sprinkler system, you need to take care of it. Sprinkler systems are very fragile and if any of the copper pipes on the exterior of your house get frozen, they will break and water will run everywhere can fill up your basement. As I said before, that’s a big and expensive mess. To prevent this, you need to “winterize” your sprinkler system. This is where you blow out your sprinkler system pipes every year with compressed air before it freezes. Once that happens you’re safe to go. I’m here to help you avoid claims and avoid damage to your home.
