Well, it’s officially Winter time, and people all over the country are going to be traveling during the holiday season. For some people, that means towing recreational equipment, such as snowmobiles and trailers. But before you hit the road, make sure you take a look at your insurance policy to see if and how you are covered in case you are involved in a mishap.
If you’re renting a trailer, make sure to check if your auto policy will cover a rented trailer or provide coverage if the equipment you are towing is damaged in an accident. Truck and trailer rental companies often offer renters additional insurance coverage that you can buy as well. U-Haul, for example, offers a “Safetow” policy that includes Damage Waiver Protection, which covers you if damage occurs to the trailer or tow dolly. Vehicle-in-Tow protection covers damage to the vehicle being towed, if applicable.
Before you start towing your toys around, follow these simple tips to protect your vehicle and stay safe on the road:
- Keep in mind that towing puts a strain on your transmission, so have it serviced, particularly if the fluid smells burned and looks brown rather than clear red. If you’re not sure how to check your transmission fluid, watch this video.
- Engine maintenance is critical as well. Worn spark plugs or a clogged fuel filter can have a drastic effect on performance under a load. Also, check antifreeze/coolant levels and all cooling system components. Start off your trip with an oil change and new filter.
- Power steering and brake fluids should also be checked. Check the brakes on the towing vehicle and the trailer, as well.
- Are your tires up to the task of towing? Added weight, plus acceleration and braking requirements can take their toll on tires, as well as on shock absorbers and springs.
- Check all lights and turn signal indicators on both the towing vehicle and the trailer before starting out every day.
Once you’re on the road, remember:
- Never let anyone ride in a towed vehicle. This is extremely dangerous and often illegal.
- Do not exceed recommended tow bar or hitch weight ratings.
- Perform safety checks before each trip.
- Keep spare parts on hand (pins, clips, etc.).
- Make sure the load is secured against shifting.
- Allow more time to brake for stops and to make lane changes.
- Adjust your driving habits to accommodate windy conditions created by passing cars and trucks.
- Each time you stop, check the tow bar, baseplate, and cables to make sure they are still properly attached.
- Always be aware of the towing laws in the state where you will be traveling. Contact local law enforcement if you have questions about local and state rules on speed and other restrictions for towing.
Once you’ve safely made it to your destination, relax! And remember, getting there is half the fun—but only if your journey is safe.
