Data is showing that since the COVID-19 pandemic, crime overall has declined. They are attributing it to people sheltering at home. Auto theft, however has increased significantly in some cities. The reported loss annually is about $6 billion, totaling nearly 750,000 vehicles. This may be due to people not checking on their parked cars as often and the rise in unemployment rates.
Sadly Denver, Colorado is ranked at number 16 for most vehicles stollen per capita for the last three years.
Motor vehicle theft rate: 738 per 100,000 people
Average annual motor vehicle thefts: 5,376
Overall property theft rate: 3,643 per 100,000 people
Violent crime rate: 709 per 100,000 people
This data shows Denver is several times higher than the national vehicle theft rate of 228 per 100,000 people. As we know, Colorado Springs is not too far from our state’s capitol, so please be diligent in keeping your cars out of harms way.
